Proeve van onderzoek over de huwelijkskringen van een viertal Oostvlaamse landbouwgemeenten

Abstract

As an introduction to a series of anthropological and social biological studies on the population of Belgium, we made a pre-investigation into the marriage circles and migration movements of four rural villages situated in the north of Eastern-Flanders. Using the investigations of Schwidetzky as a methodological starting point, we examined the origin of married couples and calculated the radii of the marriage circles. The influence of distance, density of population, of sex and occupation has also been examined. Although the marriage circles of these rural villages are not very extensive, these villages with a stagnant population development and a slight emigration surplus include a rather high percentage of immigrating couples. The Belgian-Dutch political frontier works partially as a marriage barrier. In view of the numerous limiting factors, however, the influence of the political element as a marriage barrier is not to be overrated.
