Abstract

The Problem of Business Cycles: Theory and Policy (a survey article). - This article aims at presenting a general survey of business cycle research in its relation to general economic theory. After a brief outline of the main developments in this field before 1950, an attempt is made to sketch the general climate of the theoretical and practical aspects of business cycle problems since the publication of G. Haberler’s Prosperity and Depression. Recent work done in the fields of economic dynamics and the economics of growth stands in close relationship to modern business cycle theory. Modern research on business cycles is fundamentally research on method. Stress is laid on the significance of the keynesian analysis in this development. There is ample evidence that the whole problem of business cycles is becoming more and more integrated with a more general theory of economic policy.
