Sociale status als faktor van maatschappelijke dynamiek: het ekologisch en sociaal-psychologisch onderzoek van de politieke verkiezing

Abstract

Social status as a factor of social dynamics: The sociological and social psychological study of political elections. - Recent studies on social stratification try to determine its role in society. Many empirical sociologists all over the world are concentrating upon the relation of political behavior to social classes. To study political behavior two basic techniques are available: Election returns can be presented graphically in map diagrams, and a comparison can be made with similar diagrams showing social characteristics. Statistical correlations between votes and social characteristics can be computed. This technique is called the ecological analysis of voting or political ecology. Since the classic work on the political ecology of France by André Siegfried it is largely applied in many European countries. The other technique consists in the social-psychological analyses of the human reactions during the voting campaign. It is typically American. As the result of these inquiries two politically significant factors are undefined: social stratification and religion. The assumption that the political orientation of voters will depend in the first place on their class position has been proved in many studies to be a very expedient working hypothesis. On the other hand, the awareness a voter has of his class position and his conception of the interests of his own class is often modified by his orientation towards other values, especially by church affiliation and religious beliefs.
