De assessment center methode: droom voor practici en nachtmerrie voor wetenschappers?
Abstract
The assessment center method ; a dream for practitioners and a nightmare for researchers ? - In recent years the assessment center method has met with a growing popularity. The rapid growth of this selection and appraisal instrument is exemplified by a plethora of applications in industrial, educational, government, military and other organisational settings. This paper illustrates that this success is largely justified. Some common views with regard to assessment centers are compared to existing empirical evidence. Resulting from this, it is shown that assessment centers score well both on ’hard’ criteria such as predictive validity, reliability and utility and on softer criteria such as acceptability of candidates, reactivity and impact on candidates. Despite these advantages the lack of valid rating dimensions is identified as the most important weakness : assessors seem not to be able to distinguish among the various rating dimensions. Finally, some practical implications of this crux in the assessment center paradigm are drawn and possible solutions suggested.
