Rock en politiek: een evaluatie

Abstract

Rock and politics : an evaluation - This article deals with the much debated relationship between rock and politics. The introduction contains a very brief history of almost fifty years of rock and politics. Subsequently, and as a result of rather disappointing studies observing the effects of rock, political rock is viewed from a communication point of view : who is saying what to whom and with what effect ? This can give some productive insight in the very nature of the process. The second part of the article discusses the charity-rock period of the eighties, and more specifically the question whether this period has turned out to be ’effective’. Three initiatives are dealt with : Live Aid, the Mandela Tributes and the Amnesty International Tours. Concluding remarks are presented, arguing that charity-rock was both cooperative and disruptive, and that rock must be seen primarily as a catalyst for pushing the political agenda, and not as an alternative for real political action.
