The Orthography Game. A structurist approach - In this article an analysis is made of the debate that took place early 1994 in Flanders and in the Netherlands about the proposals for a spelling reform by the 'Geerts’ committee of the ’Nederlandse Taalunie’. The article does not tackle the question of what arguments pro and contra are most suitable or convincing. However, an attempt is made to illustrate and explain the dynamics of the controversy. The used perspective is a structurist one : on the one hand the focus is on the way the social context structures and determines the debate, on the other hand particular attention is given to the fact that the debate has a socially constitutive character in its own right.
