Sociale en culturele obstakels in de preventie van AIDS in ontwikkelingslanden

Abstract

Social and cultural obstacles to the prevention of AIDS in developing countries - The aids epidemic is spreading rapidly in some parts of the world, including sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast-Asia, despite numerous information, education, and communication programmes. In the absence of treatment or vaccines, prevention is the only weapon in the fight against aids. Prevention implies sexual behaviour modifications and condom use. Cultural, societal, moral and socio-economic factors are important determinants of sexual behaviour, and have to be taken into account when designing effective educational programmes. In societies where HIV is mainly heterosexualy transmitted as many women as men are infected. In many countries aids is a multiple jeopardy for women in their role of wife, mother and care giver. Sexual behaviour programmes have to address the youth in the first place and to educate them towards responsibility and mutual respect.
