De berichtgeving over homoseksuele mannen en vrouwen in de Vlaamse dagbladpers

Abstract

Homosexuality in Flanders newspapers - Part one of the present article discusses the way homosexual people are reported on in general. Part two is a content analysis erf five Flemish newspapers which addresses the following questions : to what extent and in what ways do the papers deal with homosexuality and how does this affect their readers ? Most of the media specialists, i.e. those specialized in studying the interaction between reality and the media, agree on how homosexual people and/or homosexual subjects are to be treated - both as main theme of a program or on article and, whenever it is relevant, as an integrated subtheme relating to another main theme. In the latter case, for instance, a main theme dealing with the death of someone’s partner, can easily include a subtheme on the way homosexual men and women tackle this problem. Our content analysis reveals that De Morgen is the only paper really trying to report on homosexual people when the news is relevant and in a way similar to that in which any other subject would be reported on. Het Nieuwsblad does not consistently cover homosexual subjects; however, when it does report on gays and lesbians, this is done in a neutral way. The same goes for Het Volk, although there is even less coverage of homosexuality here. As for Het Laatste Nieuws, this seems to be mainly interested in homosexuals as a source of sensational news. Finally, Gazet van Antwerpen, contents itself with merely mentioning subjects relating to homosexuality.
