Afvallen en overlopen: over het aanpassen van identiteit in een veranderende werkelijkheid

Abstract

Disloyalty and defection. On adjusting one’s identity in a changing environment - People living in a community, when driven by circumstance, are liable to change their ways of being and acting. Gearing their attitudes and behaviour to new imperatives and possibilities enables them to come to terms with everyday reality, and with themselves, in the world they are experiencing. This article deals with the phenomenon of defection, both past and present, which is so characteristic of humans and which has initiated so many major social changes. In order to appreciate the significance of this phenomenon, account should be taken of the extent to which consciously living humans are involved in experienced reality and of the actual existence of this reality as an external entity, as many appear from the wide range of illustrative examples offered.
