Waarom worden organisaties opgestart?: een onderzoek in de "venture capital" sector in Nederland, Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk

Abstract

Why are new organizations established ? A study of the 'venture capital' sector in the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom - Why are organizations set up ? This question can be answered by looking at the personality of the entrepreneur, the network surrounding the new venture, the environment in which the venture is created and the macro-economic perspective. In this article, a population ecology viewpoint is taken to answer this question, i.e. the environment in which organizations are created is viewed as the most important factor in explaining their foundation from a population perspective. The key environmental variable is population density, i.e. the number of organizations already existing in a population at the moment of founding. When density is low, then the form is not legitimized, but competition is low too. This means that each new venture facilitates a subsequent one. On the other hand, when density is high, the form is legitimized, but competition is high too; in this setting, every new venture decreases the probability of a subsequent one. This theory is tested and confirmed for the venture capital sector in the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1990. Moreover, relative density in one country may influence positively or negatively the founding rate in another country, depending on which industry is more mature.
