De handdruk: een symbool van sociale cohesie

Abstract

Shaking hands. A symbol of social cohesion - Shaking hands is a common enough practice. When meeting, being introduced or reunited, taking leave etc., on any of these occasions we are bound to shake hands, thus bearing witness to the social dimension of life in a community. Without this gesture our communal life and the social relationships evolving from it would be unthinkable. Handshaking as a form of communication signals in an expressive and observable way how we experience our conscious selves as well as the reality of living with fellow humans. The present note touches upon both the symbolic and functional significance of handshaking and describes how it is embedded in today’s lifestyle.
