Religie als dynamisch antwoord op conflictsituaties in de migraties
Abstract
Religion as a dynamic answer to situations of conflict in migration – After two years of participant observation in two migrant communities in Brussels we can conclude that religious symbols formulate a clear reflection of a particular style of life and thus function to synthesize a people’s ethos and their world view. In changing this particular style of life in migration, people tend to change religious symbols too. We studied the specific way of reflecting traditional structures and the reshaping of these structures in Brussels, which is not without problems of conflict with the new social system. We worked in two communities, the Moroccan and that of the Christian Turks, each of them with their own problems in confronting the Belgian situation. The crucial problem for the Moroccan lies on the one hand in the danger of female sexuality for the male reputation, which has an importance of consequence in migration, and on the other hand in the generation conflict. As an answer the Jama’at al Tabligh (a missionary society) offers to men a new social and moral status. The crucial problem for the Christian Turk lies in the restoration of traditional hierarchical tribe structures in a new environment. The specific redefinition of Christian symbols gives legitimation to recreating traditional structures in a new social system.
