Methodologische suggesties voor taalonderzoek in de studie van mentaliteiten
Abstract
Methodological suggestions for linguistic research in the study of mentalities – Although mentalities and ideologies are constitutive of historical facts, and sometimes crucial in social-scientific explanation, they remain notoriously difficult to investigate. The present contribution aims at formulating a number of methodical and methodological proposals for linguistic research as part of the study of mentalities. The proposals have to be situated against the theoretical and disciplinary background of linguistic pragmatics. They build on the fundamental embeddedness of language in society, and therefore in history, and centre around a concept of 'genre' as a historical phenomenon, in which traces of the sociocultural and political conditions for text production can be found. Genre study, it is argued, is therefore a form of social historiography, and reveals the underlying imagery, folk notions and ideologies of the text.
