Over distantie-regels in de preïndustriële samenleving: bezoeken en ontmoetingen in Noord-Brabant
Abstract
On rules of distance in preindustrial society. Visiting and meeting arrangements in North Brabant — The North Brabant countryside in the preindustrial era of the nineteenth century shows remarkable changes of social and cultural characteristics. This article describes the changes in specific behavioural patterns, especially in visiting and meeting arrangements. Restrictions of contacts between people of different households, between masters and servants and between young men and women are observed before industrialization and complete commercialization reached the rural area of Kempenland. Obviously, there is in this setting a relationship between the changes in behavioural patterns and the modernization of the economy. Reference is also made to examples of the same kind in anthropological literature. The domain of ’ceremonial rules’ shows itself to be a very dynamic aspect of society indeed.
