De (beleids)relevantie van de sociale statistieken in België

Abstract

The relevance of social statistics in Belgium - The aim of this article is to test the relevance of the social statistics published by the National Institute For Statistics in Belgium. The following criteria are used : transparency, comparability, completeness, delay and overlapping. In general social statistics are characterised by lack of transparency. Many concepts are insufficiently specified and not clearly defined. Comparability has been complicated by different interpretations of data :inconsistent use of variables, change of period of reference, etc. For a number of statistics systematically no or incomplete data are available. Delay is limited to one year for most statistics, but for some of them two or three years is not unusual. As regards overlap, it should be pointed out that social statistics have to play a very specific role. Some of their data are published nowhere else. Unfortunately, the social statistics do not form a clearly integrated whole.
