Jodendom en Westers rationalisme: een studie van Webers "das Antike Judentum"

Author

Abstract

Judaism and western rationalism. A study of Weber’s 'Das antike Judentum - In his book on ancient Judaism Weber deepened his Protestantism thesis. He showed that Judaism has given an important impetus to the rationalisation of every-day life. In this article it is argued that Weber, while brilliantly exposing the elements of ethical rationalism within Judaism, neglected the specific Jewish back¬ ground against which this rationalism took shape. In the first section a synthetic outline is sketched of Weber’s conception of rationalisation. In the second Weber’s analysis of ancient Judaism is elaborated in detail. In the last section this analysis is tentatively put in the context of the Jewish world view. This leaves Weber’s analysis intact but allows for substantially different conclusions with respect to the relationship between Jewish and western rationalism.
