Op zoek naar een nieuw paradigma?: de "state of the art" na twee decennia nieuwe stedelijke sociologie
Abstract
In search of a new paradigm. The state of the art after two decades of new urban sociology - Starting from the themes and conclusions of the 7th Urban Change and Conflict Conference, the present article briefly summarizes two decades of new urban sociology. Guided by a rather negative perception of the state of the art, including a feeling of anomie shared by many scholars, we look back at the development of the new urban sociology, which was to become the dominant structuralist paradigm by the end of the 1970’s, and at its subsequent decline during the 1980’s. Some of the reasons for this development are subjected to further scrutiny. They are related, first, to developments in society at large, involving spatial consequences; secondly, to reformulations of the viewpoints previously expressed by such leading scholars as, for instance, M. Castells, notably on the changing role of space in explaining social processes; thirdly, to the reappearance of the spatial discussion in mainstream sociology.
