Marginaliteit als een tweevoudige werkelijkheid

Abstract

Marginality as a dual reality - Marginality tends to be described and discussed in the literature as ’downward’ marginality. In the present article the scope of the phenomenon is broadened into a form of interaction which also encompasses ’upward’ marginality. At the centre of this conception is the notion that Cringe groups owe their existence to the organization and operation of a social system. Dominant and dominated marginal groups are at the extremes of a social reality in which the phenomena under discussion are produced and reproduced. Marginality thus referes to a form of interaction whose characteristics lend themselves to sociological description and whose sociological impact determines our social reality.
