Ontwikkeling en integratie: een pleidooi voor Whorf
Abstract
Development and integration : a case for Wharf - Our thinking about ’others’, and their relationship with us, finds its most succinct linguistic expression in two metaphors : the metaphor of ’development’ to express our relationship with ’others’ outside our own society, and that of ’integration’ to express our relationship with 'others’ within our own society. A semantic and pragmatic analysis of both metaphors reveals that the very means of expression of our relationships with others implies a specific role-relationship, a prototypical balance of authority, and a set of action-types. It is concluded that our linguistic repertoire concerning development and integration is a typically Whorfian case.
