Abstract

Towards a general explanation of social movements as collective phenomena - In the study of social movements the so called ’resource mobilization approach’ has gained momentum in recent years. For many a researcher in the research community under consideration this evolution is to be welcomed. In their view the resource mobilization approach holds a real promise of more explicit theoretical articulation, whereas in the past mere descriptive approaches dominated the field. It cannot be denied that by regarding social movements as collective actions, i.e. deliberate actions on the part of a group of individuals in the pursuit of some common goal, the resource mobilization approach has brought to light numerous new insights as regards the mobilization of human and material resources, the organizational build-up and maintenance as well as the strategy and tactics of social movement organizations. However there is still more to it if one wants to really be able to explain social movements. It is argued then that Lindenberg’s ’dual model of explanation’ offers a number of heuristic, methodological and theoretical assumptions which may pave the way for a progressive shift of emphasis.
