Brasserie "Chez Lipp": instituut ter distinctie

Abstract

Brasserie 'Chez Lipp’ , an institute for distinction - ’Chez Lipp’, a restaurant situated at 151, boulevard Saint Germain in the sixth district of Paris, was started in 1880 by the Alsatian Leonard Lipp under the name ’Brasserie des Bords du Rhin’. When it was taken over by the Auvergnat Marcellin Cazès, who possessed great talents in using public relations, the restaurant developed into a place where the most famous men of letters and politicians met to discuss their problems. In the course of the folowing years, however, Lipp failed to preserve its original appeal and became, under the rigid guidance of its proprietor, a gathering place for snobs. The institutionalisation of distinction ended up in an institute for distinction. It is this process of institutional change which is described in this marginal note.
