Author

Abstract

“Das antike Judentum” by Max Weber: an evaluation - Das antike Judentum of Max Weber took a central place in the article titled: Max Weber on Judaism and Christianity (Tijdschrift voor Sociale Wetenschappen, 29, 1984, 4, pp. 273-291). In this note we will treat the criticism of this work more fully, especially on the basis of a volume, titled Max Webers Studie Uber das antike Judentum. Interpretation und Kritik, edited by Wolfgang - Schluchter and published by Suhrkamp (Frankfurt am Main 1981). In this volume a number of critical comments are given on Weber’s work, which are not only elucidating for his treatment of the relation between Judaism and Christianity, but also for the limits of his conception of sociology and his methodology too. Moreover Weber is defended in this volume and it becomes evident that his work still meets with great estimation. In this note we treat in the first place the criticism of Weber’s work. After that, its defence and its appreciation are elaborated.
