Nieuwe sociale bewegingen: een creatieve tegenmacht?
Abstract
New social movements: a creative counterpower? - After the decay of the „End of ideology”, the last 20 years show us a surprising rise of new values, new ideologies and new social movements. This article deals with a sociological research of current social movements in the Netherlands. First it is pointed out that current movements, next to a certain degree of internal cohesion, also show internal differences. Within movements like the environmental or feminist movements there are quite distinct wings, which are called ‘radical’, ‘reformist’ and ‘alternative’. A tendency towards increasing radicalism, as often proclaimed in literature on new social movements, could not be found. Unity between different social movements was found especially in the area of new values or ideological perspectives. The social movements want a world with more personal autonomy, a more human scale and more social integration. An important theme in their way of thinking is the concept of the ‘new community’: the search for more personal and more intensive social relations. Therefore, we can see them as a (creative) counterpower in the modernized culture, characterized by individualization, loneliness and by the fragmentation of social relations.
