Ambivalentie en marginaliteit

Abstract

Ambivalence and marginality — In his persuasive work Sociological Ambivalence (1976) Robert Merton states that sociological ambivalence refers to the opposing normative tendencies in the social definition of a role (p. 12). In the present article this notion is developed in relation to marginality. The view is adopted that marginal roles form a typical category within the sort of phenomena that Merton decribes as sociologically ambivalent. To belong to the class of marginal phenomena it is necessary for a certain category of ambivalent role structures that additional characteristics should be present. The author places these additional characteristics on the level of incompatible structural demands which dominates the organization of the social system.
