Naar een empirische typologie van zelfhulpgroepen
Abstract
Towards an empirical typology of self-help groups - Theory construction about self-help groups is heavily biased by the lack of empirical data on this subject. This is certainly applicable to the classifications and typologies of self-help groups. In the present article we discuss this problem and present an empirical typology. We constructed our typology by means of the following criteria: - a classification in terms of the kind of problem dealt with. - a differentiation between self-help groups and self-help organisations. - a classification on the basis of the goals of the group. - a differentiation in terms of the kind of membership: people who have the problem themselves or members of this family c.q. surrounding people who are directly concerned with the problem. After constructing our typology, we tested its consistence by confronting it with a self-classification of the groups.
