Psychology applied to economics - This note deals with cases in which psychology is applied to economics. We are already familiar with the contribution of psychology to the study of consumer’s choice behaviour, as applied in market research. On different occasions personality variables, motivations and life styles have been investigated for market segmentation purposes. But also in the field of macro-economics, psychology has proved to contribute significantly to exploratory research. Katona realised pioneering research when he accounted for expenditures on durables by considering personal expectations and attitudes. However, the introduction of psychological variables can also be helpful in explaining saving behaviour, inflation and periods of economic recession. It is mainly due to Katona’s efforts that the field of economic psychology has emerged. This discipline views consumer behaviour as being responsible for various so-called economic phenomena. Therefore, the note concludes with the presentation of some examples of research interests in this field of applied psychology.
