De normering van de lichamelijkheid: een kanttekening bij Vandekerckhove's "gemaakt van as"
Abstract
Fixing the standards of physicality. A note on Vandekerckhove’s „Made of ashes” - In a recent study VANDEKERCKHOVE examines what is the determining factor of the variability of somatic culture. His hypothesis is that the socio-structural system with its hierarchical organisation is that factor. This hypothesis, derived from a secondary analysis of research results in the field of sexual communication and evaluation of sexual behaviour, is stated in terms of the action and system theory of Parsons and Shills. However, a close scrutiny of this hypothesis in the light of ELIAS’ civilisation theory, published in 1939,shows that this finding is not new, but only a restatement in other terms. VANDEKERCKHOVE does not mention this monumental work of ELIAS, however. Also, the criticism he formulates on the work of Van Ussel(History of the sexual problem) is mistaken and results from a confusion of the work of Durkheim and Elias.
