Naar een resocialisatie-strategie voor preventief gedetineerden

Abstract

Towards a strategy of resocialisation for prisoners under remand — In this article the authors try to develop a strategy of resocialisation for prisoners awaiting trial. The strategy proposed is partly the result of their personal experience gained in the remand center of Ghent. In the introduction the research project of Ghent is presented and set against the background of the overall issue of penal establishments. In the first chapter the question is put forward „What is resocialisation ?”. In answering this important question a workable definition of resocialisation is proposed. The second chapter treats the mechanisms of selection in the criminal justice system. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the fact that the prison-population is a selected population, a well defined minority in our society. The lower classes are more likely to end up in prison as a result of this selection. In the third part the authors set out and analyse the social and psychological problems prisoners are faced with during detention in remand. A whole range of negative factors in the prisoner’s experience of detention are pointed out. Finally, a strategy of resocialisation for prisoners under remand is proposed. This new strategy must be seen as a part of a whole range of proposed radical changes in the criminal justice system and more in particular in the prison system.
