Coördinatie en gezag: een kanttekening bij John Finnis' Natural law and natural rights

Author

Abstract

Coordination and authority - John FlNNIS, in „Natural law and natural rights”, argues that there are only two ways of coordinating action toward the common good of any group: unanimity or authority. Since unanimity is unlikely in a large political community, he claims that coordination requires authority. According to the author, FlNNIS misrepresents the relation between unanimity and authority, the nature of ex post (as against ex ante) coordination, and moreover fails to provide an argument for moving from the premise that someone has a moral obligation to the conclusion that someone else (the state) has a right to coerce him or her to fulfil that obligation. Therefore, Finnis’ argument is both unsound and ideological.
