De intrige als uiting van kwade trouw: een aantekening over het heimelijke handelen tijdens het Boulangisme in Frankrijk op het einde van de 19de eeuw

Abstract

Intrigue as an act in bad faith. A note on machination during the time of Boulangism in France at the end of the 19th century - In the present article an attempt is made to identify a number of typical features of intriguing as a behavioural pattern. In illustrating the analysis given here we confine ourselves to Boulangism, which dominated French political life of the Third Republic between 1885 and 1889. It so happens that the history of Boulangism offers us an exemplary case of the significance of intrigue and of the way it operates in social and political life ; also, it offers us General Boulanger as the archetypal intriguer. Intrigues may be characterized at the personal level as double-hearted courses of action resulting from the combination of ambition and impotence. Socially speaking, they are means by which the weakness of a situation is exploited and through which that situation is weakened further with the purpose of controlling it. General Boulanger and his supporters behaved dishonestly with respect to their surroundings and for this reason their intrigues were acts in bad faith.
