Durkheim over lekenmoraal
Abstract
Durkheim on lay morality — This brief article offers an introduction to a revealing and intriguing text by Emile Durkheim, namely the first chapter of his book L’éducation morale (Moral education), entitled by him La morale laïque (Lay morality). This text requires some elucidation. We will begin with a short exposition about the Third Republic and its pursuit of a new philosophy of education. Then we outline Durkheim’s contribution to the development of a new moral education. Thirdly, a remark is made concerning the introduction of republican pedagogy in higher education in France. Durkheim took an important part in the process of this introduction. Finally, some data about and a summary of the translated text are given.
