De veranderende rolpatronen van mannen en vrouwen: een analyse van empirische gegevens inzake studiekeuze en hulp bij huishoudelijke taken

Abstract

Changing role patterns of men and women. An analysis of empirical data concerning study choice and help in household tasks. — By means of information obtained through a longitudinal study of 613 couples, interviewed in 1965 and 1976, the author investigated whether changes have occured in the recent past in the role patterns that have been allotted in our society to men and women. The findings are based on data about the wishes of the couples as to their children’s studies and the extent to which children are involved in performing household tasks. The analysis reveals that there is an ever decreasing difference by sex in the wishes of the parents concerning their children’s studies. Moreover, although it was found that boys are less helpful than girls in the different household tasks, the part played by boys is important. This permits the suggestion that the classical model of role segregation within the family will be rejected down by the following generations in favour of a more symmetrical one. The development in the field of education will lead in the eighties to a further neutralization of the typical occupational roles for men and women.
