Religie en macht

Abstract

Religion and power: On this moment, there is a stagnation in the theoretical development of the sociology of religion. This is due to the fact that sociologists do not agree on the definition of religion. The various definitions that have been given are either functional or substantial. Most studies in the sociology of religion are holistic. It’s the author’s proposition that an anascopic study of religion is a more adequate one, because it analyses the social reality dynamically. He contents that the symbolic interactionist model of society of the labelling perspective (sociology of deviant behavior) can be applied to the sociology of religion. An established religion (a structured complex of labels) is the outcome of a process of symbolization and definition on the macro level of society, where a special group has the power to symbolize and define. The power of the religious sector to define is the result of the mutual support of various social sectors in society: economic, political... An objective interactionist analysis of religion makes religion a vantage point to study the interconnections between these sectors.
