De relatie tussen geboorte- en sterftedaum

Abstract

The relation between the date of a person's birth and death — There is quite a lot of American research in which a relation has been shown between a person’s day of death and the anniversary of his birth or other significant yearly events. This means that people can live towards events that are important for them so much so that they can postpone their death for it. Thus, fewer deaths occur in the period before these events and an increased number after them. These observations can, however, not be shown in our study. By means of three samples with involving a total of 2.505 persons, in which the relation between the day of death and the date of birth was investigated, not one statistical correlation could be found, although more or less the same picture emerged. This could mean that in comparison with American society an individual’s birthday in Belgium is, in terms of Durkheims theory, a much less important integrating event.
