De Condottiero: een vreemdeling: een historisch-sociologische aantekening over de huurling in Italië gedurende de XIVe en de XVe eeuw

Abstract

The condottiero: a stranger. A historical-sociological annotation about the mercenary army in Italy during the 14th and 15th century — A typical Italian Renaissance figure was the mercenary captain called the condottiero. Heading a miscellaneous army composed of adventurers from different nations, this usually courageous and ambitious captain sold the services of his troops to the highest bidder. On the following pages a description is given of the particular identity of this undisciplined soldier in an attempt to understand better the relations between the ruling authority of the republics and this wandering security-seeking mercenary.
