Abstract

Some recent propaganda theories assume, that the nature of propaganda and the sort of used techniques are dependent on the position of the propagandist in the political spectrum of a nation. So it is assumed by Simons that the extremer this position is, the more combative techniques are used. In this article a research on this supposition is presented. It concerns a content analysis of those articles from the party-papers of six political parties in the Netherlands, which delt with the issue of adopting cruise missiles. A stratified random sample out of all the articles which have been published on this matter in the period 1979-1986 has been drawn. The results do indicate, that the sort of used propaganda techniques do indeed covariate with the position in the political spectrum in terms of extremism or -to a lesser degree - conservatism of this position.
