Abstract

In this article developments in borrowing, buying and reading books in the Netherlands are described and analyzed. From the analysis it appears that the share of regular readers has been quite stable over the past decades. The number of books borrowed from public libraries has grown because of the increasing number of public libraries, the improved quality of the services of these libraries and rising book-prices. The buying of books appears to be influenced by consumer income, book-prices and borrowing from public libraries. In the eighties there is an additional influence of a negative trend, probably reflecting changing consumer preferences.
