Televisie en lezen
- Tom H.A. Van Der Voort
Abstract
The article gives the text of the author’s inaugural lecture delivered on the acceptance of his office of professor of child and media studies at Leiden University (December 15th, 1989). On the basis of recent research studies, the author argues that over the past forty years the time spent on reading books and newspapers has been declining, a downward trend that has been caused in part by the appearance and advance of television. As yet, there is no evidence that television creates difficulties in the understanding of or attending to reading materials. Not children’s ability but their willingness to read is on the decline. The author refuses to take the relativistic position that television viewing is an acceptable substitute of leisure reading.
