Abstract
Due to technological and scientific progress in the food production sector our current society is endangered by certain hazards (risks) and dangers. The mass media play a key role in the sensibilization of these risks. This article shows the results of an integrated quantitative and qualitative study to assess in which way media discourses concerning food safety and possible related risks are created. Therefore, a content analysis of 14 European newspapers was performed in 6 European countries (Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, The United Kingdom, Sweden, and Denmark). Afterwards both in-depth interviews with opinion leaders in the food safety context and focus group interviews with ‘consumers’ were conducted with specific attention for national issues and concerns within public opinion.
