Abstract

Previous research on local media, mainly local newspapers, indicates that the use of these media correlates with factors as community ties and local involvement. A representative sample of inhabitants of the town of Doetinchem in the Netherlands was interviewed on their viewing behaviour of the local television station, appreciation of the programs, community ties, and local involvement. It appeared that use of local television and appreciation of the programs, and use of local television and local involvement, are significantly correlated. No significant correlation between appreciation of programs and local involvement was found. The relationship between use and community ties, and appreciation and community ties, is less clear. The questions about community ties did not form a reliable scale of community ties as a total concept.
