Sensationalisme in het Nederlandse televisienieuws in de periode 1995-2001
Abstract
The quality of the mass media performance has been subject of discussion for many decades (McQuail, 1992). The present study focuses on a specific aspect of quality: the extent of sensationalism. It aims at a theoretical explication of ‘sensationalism’ in terms of ‘vividness’ and ‘salience’, besides to an empirical explication of ‘sensationalism’, based on e.g. Grabe et al. (2001). We confine our research to Dutch television newscasts in a period when the competition between the news programs increased. The theoretical explication of sensationalism finds some support, although further research is needed. Although empirical results do not paint an unequivocal picture on trends in sensationalism, we conclude that Dutch television news in some aspects has become more sensational during ‘The Battle of the Newscasts’, and second, that the latest player (SBS) was the most sensational.
