De rol van de televisie en de Cultuur in de respectieve verzuring en verzoeting van de samenleving
- Gust De Meyer
Abstract
Since 2002,some prominent Flemish sociologists and cultural critics have formulated theories regarding the bad impact of the mass media, particularly of television. Although not made explicit, an implicit rationale can be detected in their work. It boils down to: commercial television destroys the social middle field, thus paving the way for a ‘sour’ society with irrational movements such as the extreme right wing Vlaams Blok. More then ever, questions are been asked regarding what is to be done against this souring of society. The unanimous answer has been: ‘Culture’. In this article the author criticizes these sociological theories which are ripe with buzzwords. At the same time he tries to formulate what these sociologists and cultural critics would refer to as a a populist view on media and culture.
