De laatste uitzending: over televisie en haar toekomst
Abstract
The current developments regarding digital television are by some presented as the end of television as we know it. Enhanced, interactive and personalised television services are within a hand’s reach changing the way we will make use of television. Consumers will embrace concepts as enhanced TV and interactive TV and devices such as personal digital recorders and home media servers. Television’s ubiquity and familiarity makes it a strong medium to put a fight up against, though. Many of these ‘new’ services have a history in (analogue) television and not always a favourable one. It is also hard to imagine how certain television experiences can be disregarded or replaced, therefore television will survive as a ‘preferred supplier’ of certain rich experiences and will function as a ‘screen’ for other activities (gaming, media centre) and as an alternative platform for certain functions such as e-mail and chatting that belong more ‘naturally’ on other devices. The last analogue broadcast may be there, the last television broadcast as such is nowhere in sight.
