Abstract
Physical and verbal violence as depicted in Dutch cinema movies for children released between 1975 and 2000 was investigated using a content analysis. Verbal violence, such as swearing, threatening, and lying, occurred in all 27 of the analyzed films. Physical violence was depicted in 25 of the 27 movies. On the average, verbal violence occurred six times more frequently than physical violence. The frequency with which physical violence was shown appeared to be stable over the studied 25-year period, whereas a clear decrease was found for most types of verbal violence. An analysis of the contexts in which violence occurred indicated that most of the violent acts were depicted in a realistic setting and that perpetrators of violence were almost never punished.
