Nieuws in on-line- en gedrukte kranten: verschillen in nieuwsaanbod en nieuwsconsumptie
Abstract
How readers consume and recall news presented in on-line and print versions of two newspapers in the Netherlands are investigated in this experimental study. Few differences, first of all, are found between the on-line and print versions of the newspapers. Second, reader attention to the news stories in the newspaper versions varies depending on the newspaper and news category. Readers of the print versions do not read more news articles in the same period of time than the readers of the on-line versions. Consumption of news seems more dependent on the category of news, reader sex and interest in a particular news topic than on whether the news appears in the print or on-line version of a newspaper. Finally, on the basis of cued and free recall questions, no consistent pattern emerges differentiating readers of the print newspapers from the on-line version. In conclusion, evidence has not been found that on-line readers consume and retain news differently from readers of the print version of the newspapers examined in this study.
