Abstract

The role of journalism in the Dutch multicultural society has figured on the scholarly agenda since the 1960s, but research has rarely engaged the numbers, position and role(s) of ethnic minorities among journalists in the Netherlands. This contribution aims to fill this knowledge gap, reporting the findings of a nationwide survey among journalists in the Netherlands, including a deliberate oversample of ethnic minority journalists, and featuring an analysis of the recent, relevant literature. A critical argument is also made regarding the rather superficial nature of the (public and academic) debate about representation of minorities in newsrooms in general, and the representation of ethnic minorities in particular.
