Abstract

Immigrants are often, rightly or wrongly, dissatisfied with their portrayal in the media. However, the importance of correct and balanced news coverage of these groups of the population is beyond dispute. In this article we focus on the results of a research project dealing with ethnic minorities’ portrayal in the Flemish press (2001). Newspaper journalism on immigrants was examined by analysing both everyday reporting (i.e. when the subject would not be overrepresented in the news) and crisis reporting (i.e. with sizeable immigrant-related reporting). Our main aims are to find out how ethnic minorities and related topics are covered in the Flemish newspapers, to compare our results wherever possible with previous research (1993), and to pave the way for longitudinal research.
