Abstract
This article presents an inventory of media use of a number of ethnic minority groups in the Netherlands: Turks, Moroccans, Surinamese, Antilleans, Chinese, and Moluccans. Television is the most important medium. Surinamese and Antilleans are watching mainly Dutch channels, the other groups also watch channels in their native tongue. There is much less interest in radio. Turks and Moroccans hardly ever listen to the radio. Newspapers are fairly popular, except with Moroccans. The use of Internet is fairly popular with Chinese and Antilleans. There is a two-sided need for information within these minority groups: both for information from their host country and for information in their lative tongue. This is the case for both the highly and the less integrated people in Dutch society. The less integrated can hardly be reached by the Dutch media, however, due to poor knowledge of the Dutch language. We propose to use local television programmes in the four largest cities to reach these groups.
