De Kijkwijzer als classificatiesysteem voor audiovisuele producties: een verantwoording
Abstract
The Kijkwijzer the Dutch rating system that has been in use since the Spring of 2001 to rate television programs, movies, and home videos. The Kijkwijzer provides both age-based (All ages, 6, 12, and 16) and content-based ratings (violence, fear, sexuality, discrimination, the use of drugs, and gross language). The development of the Kijkwijzer, which is the responsibility of the NICAM (Netherlands Institute for the Classification of Audiovisual Media), is based on consumer research as well as on theories and research on children and the media. The authors, who are all members of the scientific committee of the NICAM and who have been closely involved with the development of the Kijkwijzer, present an overview of the assumptions and principles that underlie the development of the Kijkwijzer 1.1. They also offer suggestions for future versions of the Kijkwijzer.
