Effecten van individuatie in CMC
Abstract
The use of communication technology in organizations is based on a number of widespread assumptions regarding the effect of mediated communication. Although these assumptions form the nucleus of most theories, they are never examined in their own right. The assumptions are that (a) the restriction of the capacity of a medium has negative consequences for the impression communicators form of each other, and (b) impression formation has particular social consequences. The first part of this assumption is confirmed in two studies. However, the consequences of impression formation for the reduction of uncertainty and willingness to collaborate are less straightforward than is often assumed. The effects of reduction of capacity on various social processes, such as the willingness to collaborate, seem to depend on the social context, and, more particularly on the social identity of the parties involved.
